No Title? We Can Still Help

Montana has a bonded title process that lets you establish legal ownership of a vehicle when standard documents are unavailable. It is one of the most flexible title programs in the country.

Why Vehicles End Up Without a Title

Missing titles are more common than most people realize. Vehicles end up without a title for several legitimate reasons:

What Is a Bonded Title?

A bonded title (also called a surety bond title) is a legal mechanism that lets you establish ownership of a vehicle when the standard title documents are unavailable or cannot be obtained. Montana's bonded title process is one of the most accessible in the US.

Here is how it works:

  1. Vehicle appraisal: The vehicle's value is assessed. The bond amount is typically 1.5x the appraised value.
  2. Bond purchase: You purchase a surety bond from a licensed bond company. Bond premiums are typically 1–2% of the bond amount, often $100–$400 for most vehicles.
  3. Montana filing: We file the bond, application, and supporting documentation with the Montana county clerk. A bonded title is issued in your name.
  4. Waiting period: Montana bonded titles carry a 3-year bond period. After 3 years, you can apply for a clean title with no bond required.

What You Need

The more documentation you have, the smoother the process. But even a bill of sale alone can be enough to start.

How Long Does a Bonded Title Take?

Bonded title processing takes longer than standard registration, typically 3–6 weeks depending on the county clerk and whether any complications arise. We keep you updated throughout and handle all correspondence on your behalf.

No-Title FAQs

Is a bonded title as good as a regular title?
Yes, for most purposes. A bonded title is a state-issued title that is recognized in all 50 states. Some lenders and insurers treat bonded titles differently during the 3-year bond period, but for registration, plating, and daily use it functions identically to a clean title.
Can I sell a vehicle with a bonded title?
Yes. A bonded title can be used for a sale just like a regular title. The buyer should be aware it is bonded. After the 3-year period, the title converts to clean.
What if someone shows up claiming they own the vehicle after I get a bonded title?
The surety bond protects against exactly this scenario. If a legitimate prior owner comes forward with a valid claim, the bond covers their loss. You are not personally liable beyond the bond amount.
My military vehicle has an SF-97 but it was never titled, is that a no-title situation?
No, an SF-97 is a valid ownership document and is sufficient to title the vehicle directly in Montana without a bonded title process. You only need a bonded title if the SF-97 is lost or unavailable.
How do I start?
Contact us before ordering. Describe your vehicle and what documentation you have. We will assess whether a bonded title is the right path and give you an exact quote before you commit to anything.
